Checkline Textile Test Instruments
F.A.Q.
How do I choose the right Checkline HP Textile Durometer (HP-2.5, HP-5, or HP-10) for my yarn packages?
Selection is based on two factors: winding density/yarn type (which dictates indenter ball diameter) and package outer diameter (which dictates base shape):- HP-2.5 / HP-2.5F (2.5 mm Ball): For closely wound synthetic yarns, hard-finish fibers, and fine filaments.
- HP-5 / HP-5F (5.0 mm Ball): The universal standard for average yarns, threads, and fibers wound at moderate density.
- HP-10 / HP-10F (10.0 mm Ball): For loosely wound spools of natural or synthetic fibers and bulky yarns.
- Curved Base vs. Flat Base (
FSuffix): Standard models have a concave curved base to sit squarely on bobbins, cones, and spools up to 15" (380 mm) in diameter; choose theF(Flat Base) suffix for large yarn packages, beams, or rolls exceeding 15" (380 mm) in diameter.
When should I use the Checkline MLT versus the LMI/LMC or YSL-2000HD yarn meters?
- Choose the Checkline MLT when setting up circular or flat knitting machines where you need all three quality parameters (yarn consumption per revolution, yarn tension in cN, and yarn speed) in a single portable instrument with preset memory.
- Choose the Checkline LMI / LMC when your primary goal is measuring exact yarn length fed in inches (
LMI) or centimeters (LMC)—either manually or synchronized to 1–99 machine cycles via the magnetic rotational sensor on theLMI-Sand LMC-S. - Choose the Checkline YSL-2000HD when you need a multi-purpose handheld yarn speed and length meter that also converts into a contact and non-contact optical RPM tachometer for inspecting drive shafts, motors, pulleys, and moving fabric webs.
How do the Checkline 200 Series Sample Cutters and EAR-300 Balance work together to measure GSM?
In textile quality control, fabric basis weight is expressed in grams per square meter (g/m² or GSM). Using the Checkline 240/100 (for fabrics up to 3 mm thick) or Checkline 230/100 (for heavy textiles and carpets up to 10 mm thick), the operator cuts a circular specimen with an exact area of 100 cm² (113 mm diameter). Placing that 100 cm² sample on the Hans-Schmidt EAR-300 Area Weight Balance gives an instant direct reading in g/m² (or if using a standard gram scale, simply multiply the weight in grams by 100). For narrower ribbons or small swatches, use the Model 230/50 (50 cm²) or Model 230/10 (10 cm²).
What is the difference between the Checkline TMT-425, Hans-Schmidt DHT-3, and Aqua-Boy TEM-1 moisture meters?
- Checkline TMT-425: Digital moisture meter (0.3%–26.0%) with built-in material curves, automatic temperature compensation, a 10,000-reading memory log, and optional USB PC software transfer (TMT-425-USB).
- Hans-Schmidt DHT-3: Digital handheld meter with 17 stored fiber/blend scales supplied as a complete kit with probe holder and needle probes 414 and 418.
- Aqua-Boy TEM-1 / TEM-1-HM: Classic analog dial moisture meter featuring direct percentage scales for wool, rayon, and cotton plus a 0–100 comparison scale, favored by mills that prefer traditional analog needle indication with interchangeable Aqua-Boy electrodes.
