The G.A.L. Gage Co. Gap-A-Let® Socket Weld Contraction Rings is a split ring that is engineered and designed to give you a pre-measured 1/16" minimum gap for socket welds. Made from a certified stainless steel, Gap-A-Let® resists corrosion from chemicals, radioactive materials, and water.
Gap-A-Let® is a split ring that is engineered and designed to give you a pre-measured 1/16" minimum gap for socket welds. Made from a certified stainless steel, Gap-A-Let® resists corrosion from chemicals, radioactive materials, and water.
Socket welds that once took 15 minutes or more to fit-up now take just seconds. There is no measuring, scribing, or re-measuring. Just pop the Gap-A-Let® into the fitting and insert pipe into the fitting, Gap-A-Let® socket weld contraction rings automatically set the required 1/16" minimum gap so you're ready to weld.
And because these rings are so easy to use, they eliminate the problems caused by guessing the gap. No longer is there a need to scribe into hard-to-mark metal pipe walls. With Gap-A-Let® rings, quality control inspectors can concentrate on the quality of the weld and not spending valuable time measuring for proper gapping. And since the costly problem of cracked welds due to improper gap is practically eliminated, your pipes can safely transport fluids the first time and every time
Features
- Automatic 1/16" Gap: Ensures immediate compliance with mandatory code requirements without manual measurement or scribing
- Prevents Joint Cracking: Absorbs thermal expansion and contraction stresses, significantly increasing piping system lifespan
- Improves Productivity: Speeds up fit-up time for pipefitters and welders, reducing labor costs
- Material Compatibility: Available in various high-grade alloys to match carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy piping systems
- Universal Fit: Designed to fit standard ANSI/ASME socket weld fittings and common pipe schedules
Applications
- Power Generation Plants: Essential for ensuring proper 1/16" minimum expansion gaps in high-pressure steam and nuclear piping systems subject to rigorous code requirements
- Petrochemical and Chemical Processing Facilities: Used by piping contractors to eliminate guesswork during fit-up and prevent joint cracking caused by thermal expansion in critical process lines
- Oil and Gas Refineries (Onshore and Offshore): Ideal for maintaining precise socket weld spacing and structural integrity in high-stress piping assemblies and manifold connections
- Shipbuilding and Maritime Engineering: A reliable, code-compliant solution utilized worldwide by pipefitters and quality control (QA/QC) inspectors for naval and commercial marine piping construction

Three Easy Steps Make Proper 1/16" Minimum Gap Socket Welds in Seconds
How to Use
- Prepare the Joint: Ensure the socket fitting and pipe end are clean, deburred, and free of oil, rust, moisture, or debris
- Insert the Ring: Place the Gap-A-Let® contraction ring inside the socket fitting until it rests flat against the bottom shoulder
- Insert the Pipe: Slide the pipe into the socket fitting until it firmly contacts the Gap-A-Let® ring. The ring automatically establishes the mandatory 1/16" expansion gap
- Tack and Weld: Apply secure tack welds to maintain alignment, then proceed with the final socket welding procedure in accordance with qualified welding procedures (WPS)
