What is the difference between magnetic and eddy current measurement principles?

Magnetic principles are used for non-magnetic coatings on ferrous substrates (steel and iron) by measuring changes in magnetic flux. Eddy current principles are used for non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous metal substrates (such as aluminum) by measuring electrical impedance variations.

Do electronic gauges require frequent manual calibration adjustments?

Most modern electronic gauges (like the PosiTector 6000 ) arrive factory-calibrated and ready to measure. Performing a quick zero check on an uncoated piece of the actual job substrate ensures maximum measurement precision before starting an inspection.

When should I choose a mechanical banana gauge over an electronic gauge?

Mechanical magnetic pull-off gauges (such as the MikroTest F6 ) operate entirely without batteries or electronics, making them ideal for hazardous, explosive, or spark-sensitive environments where electronic devices are prohibited.

Wet Film Thickness Gauges

ABQ Industrial offers a selection of Wet Film Thickness (WFT) Gauges from DeFelsko and ElektroPhysik. These mechanical tools allow paint applicators and inspectors to measure the thickness of freshly applied coatings, paints, and epoxies before they cure.

By measuring the wet film during application, users can ensure the final dry film thickness meets project specifications, preventing over-application and the need for costly rework.

Product Selection Guide

Select from reusable stainless steel combs, economical aluminum combs, or continuous measuring wheels:

Model / Link	Manufacturer	Gauge Type	Measurement Range	Key Features
DeFelsko Certified 8-Sided WFT Gage	DeFelsko	Stainless Steel Comb	1–60 mils / 25–1500 µm	40 precision notches (5 per side), includes Certificate of Accuracy
DeFelsko 6-Sided Stainless WFT	DeFelsko	Stainless Steel Comb	1–120 mils / 25–3000 µm	24 or 36 notches, includes edge radius & chamfer verification
DeFelsko 4-Sided Aluminum WFT	DeFelsko	Aluminum Comb (10 Pk)	1–80 mils / 25–2000 µm	Economical card format, easily disposable or archivable
ElektroPhysik SurfaTest	ElektroPhysik	Eccentric Wheel / Roller	Up to 32 mils / 800 µm	Continuous analog measurement wheel for flat surfaces

F.A.Q.

How do you use a notched Wet Film Comb?

Press the gauge perpendicularly into the wet coating until the outer teeth touch the substrate. The wet film thickness is the value between the highest coated notch and the lowest uncoated notch.

Why is measuring wet film thickness important?

Checking the thickness while the coating is still wet is the only way to correct the application process in real-time. This helps ensure that the paint will achieve the correct dry film thickness once fully cured.
