Why do engine builders need a dedicated Sonic Tester instead of a standard flat-probe thickness gauge?
The inside of an engine cylinder bore is a concave curved surface, and cast-iron engine blocks have a coarse grain structure with internal water-jacket scale. Standard flat-faced transducers only make two-point edge contact inside a curved bore, causing unstable readings. The Dakota R9 (PR-9) and Dakota RX8-DL (PR-8V) pair a curved-surface cylinder probe with specialized gain and fast-scan algorithms so the operator can rock the probe slightly inside the bore to lock onto the true minimum wall thickness between the cylinder and the water jacket.
What is the difference between the Dakota R9 (PR-9) and the Dakota RX8-DL (PR-8V)?

What is the difference between the Checkline TI-44NA and TI-45NA ultrasonic thickness gauges?
Both the TI-44NA and TI-45NA share the same 0.040" to 8.00" (1.0 to 200.0 mm) measuring range, 0.001" (0.01 mm) resolution, and 7 oz pocket-sized housing. The only difference is the transducer connection: on the TI-44NA, the 5 MHz probe is permanently hard-wired to the top of the gauge; on the TI-45NA, the probe connects via detachable top-mounted LEMO connectors for easy cable/transducer replacement.
