Hans-Schmidt Analog Dial Thickness Gauges
F.A.Q.
How do I zero an analog dial thickness gauge before taking measurements?
First, wipe the upper and lower feelers clean of dust or debris and allow the lifting lever to close gently so the contact points rest against each other. If the main pointer does not align exactly with the zero ("0") mark on the dial face, loosen the locking screw (if equipped) and rotate the knurled outer bezel ring until the zero mark aligns directly beneath the pointer.
Why do precision foil gauges (F-1000-30 and F-1101-30 Series) feature a thermally insulated handle?
When measuring thin films and metallic foils at a resolution of 0.001 mm (1 µm) or 0.0001 mm (0.1 µm), natural heat from the operator's hand can transfer into a metal frame and cause slight thermal expansion that skews sub-micron readings. The Checkline F-1000-30, Hans-Schmidt F-1101-30, and Checkline F-1101-30-01 incorporate a thermally insulated grip to isolate the measuring bow from body heat.
What is the difference between Metric (J, K, DM, F) and Imperial (JZ) analog models?
Mechanical analog dial indicators are geared specifically for either metric (mm) or imperial (inch) graduations. Models such as the Hans-Schmidt J-50, Hans-Schmidt J-200, and Checkline DM-820 read in millimeters, whereas imperial models such as the Hans-Schmidt JZ-100 and Checkline JZ-50R feature dial graduations in thousandths of an inch (0.001" or 0.0005"). If your workflow requires switching between inches and millimeters on the same instrument, view our Digital Dial Thickness Gauges.
Can I mount a handheld analog dial thickness gauge on a bench stand?
Yes. Compact analog gauges with 30 mm, 50 mm, or 100 mm jaw depths—including the Hans-Schmidt J-50, Hans-Schmidt Series J, and Hans-Schmidt F-1101-30—can be clamped securely into the Checkline TSTG Table Stand for Thickness Gauge for hands-free tabletop inspection.
