    G.A.L. Gage Co. Cat # 5g Pit Gauge GAL-5g
Undercuts/Pits to 0.08", Crowns to 0.04" by 0.005" Increments. Check Undercuts/Pits, Crowns, All Stainless Steel
    Measurement Scale: Inch Only

The G.A.L. Gage Co. Cat # 5g Pit Gauge (GAL-5g) is a precision pocket-sized inspection tool engineered to measure corrosion pits, weld undercut depth, and weld crown reinforcement height. Manufactured from heavy-duty stainless steel, this mechanical lever-type gauge delivers fast, dependable readings in 0.005" increments. Its ultra-slim profile makes it the go-to standard for NDT inspectors, quality control engineers, and pipe welders working in tight or restricted-access areas where bulky dial or bridge pit gauges cannot reach.

Accurate evaluation of surface pitting, corrosion severity, and weld toe profile is critical for maintaining structural integrity and meeting ASME, AWS, and API inspection standards. The G.A.L. Gage Cat # 5g delivers laboratory-level precision in a compact, field-ready format.

Featuring an offset precision stylus tip and a balanced indicator lever, the Cat # 5g accurately measures undercut and pit depths up to 0.08" and weld crown heights up to 0.04". Clear, deep-etched graduations in 0.005" increments ensure long-term readability even under harsh abrasive shop and field environments. Equipped with a locking thumb nut, inspectors can lock measured values in place for verification, photographic documentation, and report recording.

    Features

    • Dual Measurement Capability: Evaluates undercuts/pits up to 0.08" deep and weld crown reinforcement up to 0.04" high
    • Fine Precision Scale: Graduated in clear 0.005" increments for precise flaw sizing
    • Ultra-Slim Profile: Engineered specifically for tight clearance, curved pipe walls, and restricted access areas where conventional V-WAC or dial gauges cannot fit
    • All-Stainless Steel Construction: Resistant to rust, corrosion, and wear, ensuring exceptional durability in field conditions
    • Locking Mechanism: Knurled thumb screw locks the indicator arm to preserve readings for visual confirmation and reporting
    • Laser-Etched Markings: High-contrast graduations and markings resist fading and mechanical abrasion
    • Pocket-Sized & Portable: Compact, lightweight design slips easily into a pocket or tool kit

    Applications

    • Weld Quality Inspection: Measuring undercut depth along the toe of fillet and butt welds in accordance with AWS D1.1 and ASME Section IX
    • Pipeline & Vessel Corrosion Assessment: Sizing localized pitting and surface degradation on process piping, pressure vessels, and storage tanks (API 510/570)
    • Structural Steel Fabrication: Checking weld bead crown height and weld profile compliance
    • Boiler & Heat Exchanger Tubes: Accessing narrow clearance areas for tube sheet and tube wall evaluations
    • Plant Maintenance & Turnarounds: Routine non-destructive visual examination (VT) of operational equipment

    How to Use

    • Zeroing and Baseline Verification: Place the flat reference base of the gauge firmly against a flat, uncorroded surface of the base metal and ensure the pointer aligns precisely with the "0" mark before taking measurements
    • Measuring Undercut or Pitting Depth: Rest the straight reference base flush against the parent material adjacent to the defect, lower the fine stylus pointer into the bottom of the cavity or undercut, and read the depth directly on the scale in 0.005" increments (up to 0.08")
    • Checking Excess Weld Metal (Crown Height): Position the reference base on the plate adjacent to the weld toe, allow the stylus tip to rest on the crest of the weld reinforcement crown, and read the crown height measurement on the graduated scale (up to 0.04")
    • Locking and Preserving Measurements: Tighten the knurled thumb screw while the pointer is seated on the measured feature to freeze the reading for easy verification, photo recording, or when working in tight, blind inspection areas
