G.A.L. Gage Co. Cat # 6 Automatic Weld Size AWS Type Gauge GAL-6
For Accurate Calibration of Butt Fillet Type Welds
Measurement Scale: Inch or Metric
The G.A.L. Gage Co. Cat. 6 Automatic Weld Size AWS Type Gauge (GAL-6) is an essential, high-precision inspection instrument engineered to measure and verify critical weld dimensions in strict accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) standards. Designed for welding professionals, inspectors, and QA/QC personnel, this versatile pocket tool ensures structural integrity and compliance across demanding industrial applications.
Crafted from premium, heavy-duty stainless steel, the CAT #6 gauge is built to endure harsh shop floor and outdoor job-site environments without sacrificing measuring accuracy. It streamlines quality control by eliminating the need for multiple single-purpose tools, allowing operators to quickly evaluate both fillet and butt welds.
Whether working in heavy fabrication, bridge construction, shipbuilding, or pipeline projects, this gauge provides fast, reliable, and repeatable measurements. It is available in both Inch (GAL-6) and Metric (GAL-6-M) scale configurations to accommodate international engineering standards. Optional NIST-traceable certification is also available to meet rigorous quality assurance documentation requirements.
Certification
The Cat # 6 Automatic Weld Size AWS Type Gauge can be certified. The certification is not included in the base price and is available at an additional cost. Just add it to cart if your quality control or compliance standards require it.

How to Use
- Measuring Fillet Weld Leg Length: Place the side of the gauge squarely against the side of the base plate. Lower the gauge until the leg contacts the toe of the weld. Next, lower the sliding pointer until it contacts the intersecting plate surface. Read the actual leg length directly from the scale
- Checking Fillet Weld Concavity: Verify the required fillet weld size from your engineering drawings (e.g., 1/2 inch). Set the slide to this dimension on the Max Concavity scale. Position the gauge so that the 45-degree bevel rests squarely on the adjoining plate surfaces. If the sliding pointer does not touch the weld face, the weld is structurally insufficient (excessive concavity) and requires additional weld pass
- Checking Fillet Weld Convexity: Verify the specified fillet weld size (e.g., 1/2 inch). Set the slide to this dimension on the Max Convexity scale. Place the gauge with the 45-degree bevel resting squarely on the plates. Ensure the weld stays within permissible maximum convexity limits; over-convexity wastes filler metal without adding structural strength and can introduce stress risers
- Measuring Butt Weld Reinforcement: Place the two legs of the gauge flat on the adjacent plates across the weld. Lower the sliding pointer down to the crown of the weld. Read the reinforcement height directly from the scale to verify it meets code tolerances (e.g., 1/8 inch)
